Why Whitewater?

Because at Washington Elementary School, we care about the children who walk through our doors, and we teachers are committed to helping your child realize his/her maximum learning potential. In our classrooms, you will see creativity and exploration being taught along with basic skills. We work as a team to meet the specific needs of each child, and we encourage parent input. I have been a teacher and parent here for a number of years, and I value the Washington community from both sides.

I am Pamela Dennis and I teach English Language Learners (ELLs) at Washington Elementary. I am fluent in Spanish, and I provide help to newcomers and to many bilingual children as they learn about life in America. Our goal is for students to learn the academic and linguistic skills that they need to be successful in school and to participate in school and community activities.

Some students meet in my room daily for reading instruction in small groups. Students receive help with homework, vocabulary and study skills, tests, and computer skills. We have fun as kids learn about weird English spelling and read many, many interesting stories and books. Students also get some extra support so they can participate in school wide programs such as Accelerated Reader and Book It.

I also provide assistance to parents. I translate at conferences for parents and teachers. This helps strengthen the home – school connection which leads to greater student success.

I have been teaching at Washington for more than10 years, and I am proud to be a part of the Washington School team.

From all places in the United States, Whitewater feels more like home. I grew up in Quito- Ecuador, a small country with small cities. Too much traffic and too many people can sometimes make me feel overwhelmed. Whitewater is a small community where education is everyone's priority. I am proud to say that I teach in one of the best school districts in Wisconsin. What makes it one of the best? My colleagues. They are always motivated to teach and that makes students be motivated to learn.

My name is Sandra Ramirez and I teach English as a Second Language. This is my ninth year at Washington Elementary and I am very excited to be part of it!

I am originally from Ecuador so Spanish is my first language, as is for most students I work with. I enjoy working with ELLs (English Language Learners) because they remind me about myself.

For the most part I work with students outside of their regular education classrooms. I help them acquire the English skills needed to be able to succeed academically. In addition, I also like to work with parents because their involvement in school has shown to have a positive impact in student performance.
